A long way to go for a sunday run !!
The antarctic marathon takes place every year in December. The attraction is so that they can run a marathon on every continent and often run a marathon in South America before heading to Punta Arenas to be flown out to the antarctic which takes around 4 hours. The year that I went we ended up staying over Xmas as the winds were too strong for the Alushyn cargo plane to land. Competitors usually complete this in around 4 hours although there is also a 100k “race” which takes around 12 hours ! A lot of the visitors use the camp as a base for numerous expeditions both scientific and physical - one kite-surfed to the south pole in 5 days (we were still over 600 miles from the south pole) Very unlikely that I will ever get the chance to go there again but what an experience !!
